NILE’S MA in Professional Development for Language Education (MAPDLE) is a course of study for experienced professionals in Language Education who wish to develop their specialist skills. For many, it acts as a springboard to career progression. It has been running now for 30 years and at any one time we have participants from around 60 different countries across the world. All NILE's MA candidates have access to the University of Chichester's library as well as over 20 ELT ebooks from Cambridge University Press and Assessment, Macmillan Education and Oxford University Press through the NILE eLibrary, at no extra cost.

FAQ

You have up to six years in which to complete the MA, although you may complete it in less time. There are 4 start dates for the modules each year, and each has an 8-week taught course followed by a 6-month tutor supervised assignment..
The MA is designed to meet the demands of with this reality. During the taught online modules, you will need to set aside between 5 and 8 study hours per week. Most of this work is asynchronous, so you can control your study hours according to your other demands.
We run face-to-face modules in Norwich, UK in July and August. These run over two weeks, followed by the distance assignment over 6 months. The availability of these courses will depend on student numbers, and we will notify you in advance, so you are able to plan accordingly.
If you have an undergraduate degree and a DELTA or Trinity Diploma you can claim 60 credits, exempting you from the Core Module.
In addition to the Core Module, which explores language teaching and learning context, there are 9 elective modules of which you select two. Details of the full range are found here a link to the modules description page. You can decide which modules to take as you go. The dissertation itself can focus on any aspect of the language education sector, Including teaching, training, testing, management, materials development etc. There are 48 dissertation titles below – I don’t know if you want to use them?
The taught part of the modules is highly participative. You and your course colleagues are treated as a co-constructing group as well as individuals. Activities support collegial interactions through discussion forums, shared document creation, live sessions etc. We feel that this source of learning is as important as the course materials and tutor input. This also allows or a sharing of professional experiences and understandings from an international perspective.
The tutors are all highly experienced practitioners in their fields with a depth of experience in a range of global contexts. Their profiles can be found here a link to the trainer page. The module teams meet regularly for course review and development, assessment standardisation, and mutual support.
On every module you will have an experienced tutor who will support you during the taught part of the course and then offer one-to one supervision over the 6 months of your assignment writing.
Each module has a full suggested reading list in support of the articles and texts that come as part of the study programme. NILE has an online library including access to a range of subscription journals, such as the ELT journals, as well as the 30 key text e-books. You will also have access to the University of Chichester online library.
Each module is assessed via a written assignment exploring an aspect of the subject area of interest and relevance to you. The module assignments and dissertation have been created to allow you the flexibility to tailor your research to your own professional environment. The aim is to make your work immediately relevant and supportive of the work you do.
In addition to the tutors, you will be supported individually by the Registrar and the MA Programme Leader. We recognise that over the period of the MA, your professional or personal situation may change, and we have a commitment to supporting you negotiate these realities alongside your study flexibly and with a priority on your own well-being.
