This module will raise your practical and theoretical awareness of CLIL educational contexts. You will explore key principles in CLIL and their application to teaching practice. You will have opportunities to investigate at least one specified CLIL context, to create CLIL teaching and learning materials and design a CLIL training course with accompanying materials.
This module carries 30 credits.

Course content
Assessment (written after completion of the course and supervised at distance by tutors):
A portfolio (50%) containing TWO of the following three options:
- An INSET course for a specified context.
- A set of materials designed for a specific CLIL context.
- A report on a small-scale investigation in a CLIL context.
Main assignment (3,000 words) (50%) in the form of an experience report with critical comment, OR a case study rooted in a CLIL context OR a report on research into an aspect of CLIL.

Online MA modules are highly interactive and learning takes place through varied and engaging multimedia content and the collaboration between participants from different contexts.
Courses are broken down into individual units and activities, forming a clear structure, and all participants work on the same unit in the same week. Within that time period there is a high level of flexibility to help you fit studying around your life and work. The interaction, via forums and other collaborative tools built into the platform, helps and encourages you to share ideas, ask questions, explore concepts and build up a community.
You need a computer, a headset (with microphone) and an internet connection. Much of the course can be done on a mobile device, but a computer is needed for certain activities and tasks.
All participants have access to NILE’s extensive ELT e-library and an innovative social and cultural programme.
MA Module Leader: Phil Ball
Phil is based in San Sebastián in Spain. He is a CLIL materials writer and teacher-trainer and has been closely involved with the award-winning Basque project ‘Eleanitz’. He has been involved in several European-based CLIL projects, and has written a wide variety of CLIL-based textbooks for the Basque and Spanish social science and English language programmes. He co-designed the ‘CLIL Essentials’ online course for the British Council, is the co-author of ‘Putting CLIL into Practice’ (OUP 2015) and his CLIL textbook series for the Basque curriculum was nominated for the ELTons Innovation Award in 2016.
