Fiona Malcolm NILE

Fiona Malcolm is a teacher trainer, educational mentor and materials writer. Based in Scotland, she is globally mobile and has worked extensively in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

She began volunteering as an English tutor in Glasgow during the 90s and this became a lifelong passion. She has a degree in Politics with History, the Trinity TESOL, the Cambridge DELTA and a Masters in TESOL with Applied Linguistics from Sheffield Hallam. Continued professional development has included mentoring students at Glasgow Caledonian University, completing the British Council ‘English in Early Childhood: Language and development’ course along with ‘Migrants and Refugees in Education – A Toolkit for Teachers’ and the International House ‘Certificate in Online Learning’ (COLT).

As an experienced freelance education consultant, she has been the trainer of choice for many British Council projects in Africa under the English Connects programme. This included face to face delivery with observations in country and remote input and mentoring post-Covid. Her work in the Female Voices project during 2025 ensured that female educators' voices were heard throughout the region by mentoring participants in creating teaching tips, lesson plans and short videos which are shared on the British Council Teaching English Africa website.

She has worked for Cambridge and the British Council in China, with EMI input and mentoring with university professors, as well as creating a drama programme for primary teachers with delivery and remote support followed up by live observations of final productions in-country. She has delivered the CELTP face to face, then modified and delivered the first blended CELTP, and then the first fully remote version which was balanced by supported lesson planning and recorded observations throughout.

In addition to this she has delivered CiPELT and CiSELT in Ukraine, worked with both tertiary and secondary English clubs leaders and edited the English Clubs Secondary handbook, used her passion for stories and drama in English Language projects in China and in Tunisia, delivered Trainer and Mentor Development courses in North Africa, TKT to teachers in Kazakhstan, Egypt, Libya and Rwanda, EfT in Mali, Peru and Tanzania and has written materials for CUP for the UAE. She has project managed a team of writers in Kazakhstan when training teachers in country to write text books and wrote SMS language learning materials for British Council projects in Kenya and Senegal. The has all been highlighted throughout by conferences presentations and journal articles in various contexts.

Most recently, she stepped into the world of exam creation by working for TQUK through managing and mentoring teams of writers then submitting proposed qualifications to Ofqual for successful approval.

Fiona is also a clinical hypnotherapist and enjoys gathering and using a variety of holistic skills, both personally and professionally. This lends itself well to remaining calm and composed when working in fragile contexts and challenging environments.
