Erkan Arkin

Erkan is a lecturer in the education faculty of Eastern Mediterranean University, North Cyprus, teaching at the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher education program. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics, specialising in English Medium Instruction (EMI) in higher education.

Erkan comes from an educational background with over twenty years' teaching experience in the university context with a strong interest in contributing to the education and development of pre-service and in-service teachers, thanks to his dual role as faculty staff and professional development specialist at the university’s Foreign Languages and English preparatory school. Amongst the positions held, he acted as the head of professional development, responsible for EAP teacher training and the Rector’s coordinator for academic affairs, managing English language support programmes across various academic disciplines.

After completing his doctoral study, Erkan became interested in supporting university lecturers to improve their educational practices, specifically focusing on maximising learning in English-taught programs. His latest presentations and publications have covered topics on EMI in higher education and EMI teacher training, including chapter contributions in the two edited books, English-Medium Instruction in European Higher Education: English in Europe (2015) and English as the Medium of Instruction in Turkish Higher Education: Policy, Practice and Progress (2022).

Erkan is a tutor on NILE’s online course “English as a Medium of Instruction”. He joined the NILE project team in 2019 that provided consultancy and facilitated the development and delivery of a three-year national EMI capacity-building program for Uzbekistan’s higher education sector. He has been a NILE consultant trainer since 2021, contributing to the MAPDLE program.
