This module will raise your practical and theoretical awareness of CLIL educational contexts. You will explore key principles in CLIL and their application to teaching practice. You will have opportunities to investigate at least one specified CLIL context, to create CLIL teaching and learning materials and design a CLIL training course with accompanying materials.

Course content

 
The range of educational contexts which make up the field of CLIL; how to define what constitutes a CLIL context
 
The theoretical domains of language education and learning which contribute to an understanding of CLIL
 
How to describe the language used in subject materials and in the classroom teaching of subjects
 
How to use techniques for investigating subject and classroom language
 
A range of approaches to, and methodologies for, teaching CLIL
 
The range of tasks used in integrating content and language and how to design such tasks
 
The factors determining the construction of assessment procedures in CLIL; how to design assessment procedures for a specific CLIL context

Assessment

written after completion of the course and supervised at distance by tutors

A portfolio (50%) containing TWO of the following three options:

  1. An INSET course for a specified context.
  2. A set of materials designed for a specific CLIL context.
  3. A report on a small-scale investigation in a CLIL context.

Main assignment (3,000 words) (50%) in the form of an experience report with critical comment, OR a case study rooted in a CLIL context OR a report on research into an aspect of CLIL.

Timetable

This course consists of 50 hours of tuition, delivered between 09:15 and 16:00, Monday - Friday. You will also take part in cross-curricular workshops on a variety of topics, and each course includes a free evening and weekend programme of social and cultural activities and trips.

Time will be built into the course for reflection and for you to consider how to adapt ideas from the course to your classroom in your own professional contexts.

MA Module Leader: Phil Ball

Phil Ball Phil is based in San Sebastián in Spain. He is a CLIL materials writer and teacher-trainer and has been closely involved with the award-winning Basque project, ‘Eleanitz’. He has been involved in several European-based CLIL projects, and has written a wide variety of CLIL-based textbooks for the Basque and Spanish social science and English language programmes. He co-designed the new ‘CLIL Essentials’ online course for the British Council and is the co-author of the new book about CLIL, ‘Putting CLIL into Practice’ (OUP 2015) and his CLIL textbook series for the Basque curriculum was nominated for the ELTONS Innovation Award in 2016.
