Mary Carney has worked as a teacher, trainer, academic manager and CPD consultant in Europe and East Asia for over 27 years. She holds a BA, MA in TEYL (University of York), Diploma in ELTA (University of Cambridge LES), postgraduate Diploma in ELT Management Skills (IH, London/University of Aston), a Diploma in SEN and a Certificate in TEAP.
Her teacher training accreditations are with Cambridge ESOL, Trinity College London and University of Sunderland, UK. She was a Cambridge external assessor of CELTYL for over 10 years; East Asia development lead for TYLEC (British Council/Trinity College London) and has been a panel member / external moderator for the Trinity Cert TESOL in Australasia since 2013.
Mary has co-authored two teaching manuals for mainstream schools in Hong Kong in collaboration with Ed City, Scholar, the British Council and the Hong Kong education ministry (EDB). Her articles on ELT, published in a range of journals, have focused on the role of gender, multi-literacies and the use of technology in TEYL; issues relating to CPD in Nepal and TEYL academic management in Spain.
Her past research has focused on the impact of line management on teacher development, and the impact of interactive whiteboards on learners’ attention to literacy features. Her current research interest is the link between positive relationship building, performance management and staff retention in ELT. She has been supervising dissertations on University of Chichester’s MA in PDLE since 2015.
