For a week in May we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of 5 language teachers from Galicia, Spain for a tailor-made course. The purpose of the week was for the teachers to enhance their skills in testing and assessing writing and speaking, with a particular focus on training to use marking scales and the use of technology in testing.
After an introduction with course trainers Thom Kiddle and Dave Allan, the group, led by María Conde, spent the week focusing on language assessment principles and practice adapted to the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas context to ensure the group received the most from their course. Outside classroom hours, the group got acquainted with Norwich and the surrounding countryside by attending welcome drinks with the tutors at a country pub, as well as going on a ghost tour of the city's historic centre and having afternoon tea at The Assembly House.
This course was group leader María's second time at NILE, after attending our Advanced Language, Materials and Methodology course last July. Having praised her last visit, María and the rest of the group left similarly excellent feedback this time around, stating:
“The course allows me to be more confident to prepare better tests and to assess in a fairer way.”
“Nice and helpful people all over the place.”
“The welcome drinks made us feel at ease from the very first day and that contributed to create a positive atmosphere in the classroom the following days.”
“I learnt so much and I can start using some things right now - the course was very practical.”
“It covered areas of IT tools which can certainly be used in a practical and effective way; not only when it comes to dealing with assessment but also to improve the formative tests and everyday lessons of students.”
It's clear that the group had an enjoyable, rewarding and extremely beneficial experience here at NILE that will help them to improve on various aspects of their teaching. We certainly hope to welcome the group back to NILE again one day!
