In medieval times, Norwich was one of the greatest cities in England, and today as East Anglias
capital city, it still is - offering a rare blend of historic
interest and modern sophistication. It is not only a city of tradition,
but also a thriving modern, commercial and cultural centre.
Set in magnificent countryside,
close to the Norfolk
Broads and some of the UKs most breath-taking coastline,
Norwich has a university, two cathedrals, a castle,
art galleries, museums, cinemas and theatres, as well as a lively
city centre
with a wide range of shops, pubs and restaurants. NILE is
included on this
sub-section of the map, on the corner of Cleveland Rd. and
Upper St. Giles St.
It has the added attraction
of the countrys largest 6-day
open-air market, as well as hundreds of speciality shops in
a maze of cobble-stoned lanes and alleys. These have recently been
re-christened "The
Norwich Lanes". This is , in part, a response to
the opening of a large new shopping mall on the site of the old
chocolate factory. The new mall is called Chapelfield and you
can find out more about it here.
The centre of Norwich is dominated
by its magnificent 900 year-old Norman
cathedral, which boasts the largest monastic cloisters in England,
the second largest spire and over 1,000 beautiful medieval roof
bosses. The present structure of Norwich
Castle Museum & Art Gallery has stood since the 12th century
and is one of the finest Norman secular buildings anywhere in Europe.
Today Norwich Castle is the countys principal museum, packed
with treasures and collections of national importance.
Norwich has an international
airport with regular flights international flights via Schiphol (Amsterdam) and excellent
rail
and bus
links with London and the major airports.
